MOTORIST ADVISORY – Delaware Memorial Bridge Tower Painting Project to Impact Traffic on Northbound and Southbound Spans this Weekend; Delays Expected During Peak Travel Times
New Castle, DE – The Delaware River and Bay Authority’s (DRBA) contractor, Blastech Enterprises, Inc. of Baltimore, MD, will continue to work on the Twin Spans of the Delaware Memorial Bridge this weekend. They will be painting the Bridge Towers of the Northbound Span (New Jersey bound) and preparing the Bridge Towers of the Southbound Span (Delaware bound) to be painted by erecting scaffolding platforms.
For the upcoming weekend – Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 14-16 - the right lane of the New Jersey bound bridge will be closed. The left lane of the Delaware bound span will be closed until Sunday, August 16 at 3:00 p.m. All four lanes of the Delaware bound span will be open at this time.
During the weekends of August 21-23 and August 28-30 – one lane will be closed in each direction of the Delaware Memorial Bridge for the entire period. Based on historical data, motorists should expect the heaviest traffic during the following time periods:
Fridays: 12:00 noon – 6:00 p.m.
Saturdays: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Sundays: 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Painting contractors will be working on-site from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily. The construction work is weather dependent and will be postponed should inclement conditions occur. Motorists should expect delays on both Spans of the Delaware Memorial Bridge, and on the approaches to the Bridge, especially during the peak weekend travel times. The safety of the traveling public and on-site highway contractors is the agency’s highest priority. Motorists are urged to be careful and to stay alert in and around construction zones, and obey all posted speed limit signs. Motorists may follow the Bridge on Twitter @demembridge for the latest in traffic information.
All work associated with the Delaware Memorial Bridge Tower Painting Project will be suspended for the Labor Day holiday weekend (September 4-7) and for the Papal visit to the region (September 25-28). All lanes of the Delaware Memorial Bridge will be open to traffic during these time periods.
The tower painting work on the New Jersey bound span is expected to be done by mid-September while the Delaware bound bridge towers should be completed – weather permitting – in late November 2015.
