Motorist Advisory: Hurricane Irene Likely to Impact Delaware Memorial Bridge Operations
(New Castle, DE) Due to the track, size and strength of Hurricane Irene, Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) officials expect to implement speed and lane restrictions on the Delaware Memorial Bridge this weekend: Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28.
Due to safety considerations, the DRBA may ban tractor-trailers trucks, motorcycles, and other high-profile vehicles subject to high winds from the Delaware Memorial Bridge, if sustained winds exceed 40-mph.
Beyond this 40-mph threshold, the Authority will closely monitor the flow of traffic across the bridge. Depending on bridge conditions, additional restrictions may be implemented, including the potential of a full bridge closure.
The Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) will make every effort to keep its bridge facility open as long as conditions are deemed safe to do so.
The DRBA is working closely with both New Jersey and Delaware State Transportation departments as well as neighboring bi-state agencies as the region prepares for Hurricane Irene’s impact.
DRBA officials strongly advise that motorists avoid any unnecessary travel this weekend. Travelers are urged to call the Delaware Memorial Bridge at 302.571.6368 for current information about traffic conditions.
