Delaware River and Bay Authority Endorses New Jersey’s Bayshore Heritage Byway
Adopts Supporting Resolution to Add Ferry Spur
 
(New Castle, DE) Today, the Delaware River and Bay Authority Commissioners unanimously passed Resolution 12-14, which supports an amendment to the New Jersey Bayshore Heritage Byway Route to include the Townbank/Ferry Spur between Seashore Road and to Beach Drive near the Cape May Ferry Terminal. The board action took place at its monthly meeting held in the James Julian Boardroom at the New Castle Administration complex
 
According to Scott A. Green, Executive Director of the Delaware River and Bay Authority, the State of Delaware has a similar scenic byway program that promotes alternate, picturesque routes of travel. “With the interstate connection of the ferry service, it makes a lot of sense to create this seamless route that expands tourism opportunities in both Delaware and New Jersey,” Green noted. “By getting off the beaten path, visitors and travelers alike can gain a greater appreciation for the history and culture of the Twin Capes region. We look forward to the further development of Bayshore Heritage Byway concept.”
 
Through increased general awareness of the area’s unique historic, natural, and cultural assets, the Bayshore Heritage Byway and the Lewes Byway in Delaware can provide benefits by welcoming visitors to explore and share in the significant natural and historic qualities.
 
Upon approval of the Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Transportation, the Bayshore Heritage Byway Route would be revised. The section of the Byway from Bayshore Road (County Road 603) and Route 47 to Seashore Road and Breakwater Road would be deleted, and replaced by the following:
 
At Route 47 and Bayshore Road, the route will turn west on Bayshore Road, remaining on this road as it turns south and leaves Middle Township and enters Lower Township. The route will continue south and bear to the left and Fishing Creek Road, turning east onto Breakwater Road at Fishing Creak Road. The route will follow Breakwater Road to Seashore Road where it will turn south and resume the original plan. It is also requested that a spur to the Byway be created between Seashore Road at Sandman Blvd and Lincoln Blvd at Beach Drive to be known as the Cape May – Lewes Ferry Spur.
 
Lower Township officials made the request earlier this year. “On behalf of council and our residents, we are grateful to the Authority for their support of the Bayshore Heritage Byway,” said Lower Township Mayor Michael Beck. “This spur is another piece of the plan that ultimately will lead to an increase of tourism and economic development for our community, benefiting Lower Township and the Authority. We welcome their cooperation in this and other future endeavors.”
 
The Delaware River and Bay Authority is a bi-state governmental agency created by Compact in 1962. It owns and operates the Delaware Memorial Bridge, the Cape May- Lewes Ferry, the Three Forts Ferry Crossing and the Salem Business Centre in Carney’s Point Twp., NJ. The Authority also manages corporate and aviation properties through its economic development powers - two airports in New Jersey (Millville Airport and Cape May Airport) and three in Delaware (New Castle Airport, Civil Air Terminal and Delaware Airpark). All Authority operating revenues are generated through the bridge, ferry and airport facilities.
