DRBA Commissioners Cup Awarded to Cape Henlopen Vikings
Local Mayors, Athletic Directors Participate in Trophy Presentation at Lewes Terminal
(Lewes, DE) Today, Lower Township Mayor Michael Beck, Lewes Mayor Ted Becker, Cape Henlopen High School Athletic Director Bob Cilento and Lower Cape May Regional (NJ) Athletic Director Mark Schiffbauer joined with Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) Commissioner Jim Ford and Lewes Terminal Manager Nikky Fisher for a brief ceremony to award the DRBA Commissioners Cup to victorious Cape Henlopen Vikings high school football team.
Making good on a pre-game friendly wager, Mayor Michael Beck traveled aboard the Cape May – Lewes Ferry to meet Lewes Mayor Ted Becker for lunch. The ceremony took place on the Lewes Ferry Terminal patio overlooking the Delaware Bay.
On Saturday, September 12, the Cape Henlopen Vikings bested the Lower Cape May Regional Caper Tigers 41-8 in a varsity football game to claim the 2015 DRBA Commissioners Cup. The game took place at Steven Steger Field, the home of the Lower Cape May Regional Caper Tigers
Separated by the Delaware Bay and a short trip aboard the Cape May – Lewes Ferry, the schools renewed their football rivalry in 2010. The Cape Schools hadn’t played in the regular season since the early 1980s. The host Caper Tigers beat the Vikings 25-3 in that first meeting while Cape Henlopen has won the last three clashes. The Vikings now leads the series, 3-1. Athletic competition between the two schools brings the Twin Capes closer together.
