Escape from Lewes Open Water Swim Classic Cancelled
Coastal Storm Expected to Create Hazardous Swimming Conditions
(Lewes, DE) Due to potentially hazardous swimming and small safety craft conditions caused from an off-shore low pressure system, the Inaugural Escape from Lewes Open Water Classic has been cancelled. The event was scheduled to take place on Sunday, September 27 inside the Delaware Breakwater Harbor at the Lewes Ferry Terminal. Participants were to begin the 5k and 1 mile challenging swim races by jumping off a ferry vessel into the harbor waters.
“We regret that the Inaugural Escape from Lewes Open Water Classic has been cancelled,” said Steve Del Monte, Founder of DelMoSports. “An off-shore low pressure system is expected to create rough Delaware Bay conditions. Ultimately, it is simply too dangerous and we will not compromise the safety of our participants nor the safety of our support services.” Del Monte added that the decision was made in conjunction with numerous water safety authorities involved in the event.
“We’re disappointed that the race won’t proceed this year, but we understand that safety takes precedence,” said Heath Gehrke, Director of Ferry Operations. “Steve Del Monte and his staff at DelMoSports do an outstanding job coordinating these one-of-a-kind competitive sporting events and we look forward to next year’s race.” Gehrke noted that the ferry is expected to run its regular schedule throughout the weekend.
All registrants have been notified that the race has been cancelled. Del Monte added that each participant who registered for this event may expect a DelMoSports care package with their long-sleeved Escape From Lewes tech tee, finisher medal, swim cap, and FINIS swim cords. In addition, those who registered for this year’s Escape from Lewes Open Water Swim Classic will automatically receive a comp entry to the 2016 Escape from Lewes Open Water Swim Classic.
