Three Vehicle Collision on Delaware Span of Delaware Memorial Bridge
Impact Causes Car to Flip; Passengers Unhurt
(New Castle, DE) The Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) police department is investigating a three car accident that occurred near the Delaware Anchorage of the Delaware bound span of the Memorial Bridge Toll Plaza at approximately 8:10 today. The vehicles involved include a black Chrysler Sebring, a grey Jeep Wrangler, and a white Honda Civic. The New Jersey registered vehicles had nine total occupants.
Preliminary investigation indicates the driver of a black Chrysler Sebring failed to recognize that traffic had stopped; overcorrected the vehicle to the right and clipped the grey Jeep Wrangler. The impact caused the Sebring to flip over and subsequently hit the white Honda Civic. The crash impact forcefully pushed the Honda Civic into the crash curtain of an attenuator truck positioned for construction work in the far left lane.
The black Chrysler Sebring incurred significant damage and is likely totaled. The white Honda Civic sustained major front end damage while the grey Jeep Wrangler experienced minor, mostly cosmetic damage.
No injuries were reported. An infant traveling in the Chrysler Sebring was transported to Christiana Medical Center for a precautionary medical evaluation.
Traffic flow was significantly impacted by the accident as three of four left lanes heading into Delaware were closed for more than an hour. The driver of the black Chrysler Sebring was cited for inattentive driving. The accident remains under investigation by the DRBA police department.
