Cape Henlopen Vikings Retain DRBA Commissioners Cup
Local Mayors, Athletic Directors to Participate in Trophy Presentation Set for Wednesday, September 28
WHAT: On Wednesday, September 28, Lewes Mayor Ted Becker and Lower Township Mayor Michael Beck will join with Heath Gehrke, Director of Operations for the Cape May – Lewes Ferry for a brief ceremony to award the DRBA Commissioners Cup to victorious Cape Henlopen Vikings high school football team. Making good on a pre-game friendly wager, Mayor Beck is taking the Ferry to Lewes for lunch with Mayor Becker.
WHO: Lewes Mayor Ted Becker, Lower Township (NJ) Mayor Michael Beck, Cape Henlopen (DE) Athletic Director Bob Cliento, Lower Cape May Regional (NJ) Athletic Director Mark Schiffbauer (tentative), and Heath Gehrke, Director of Ferry Operations.
WHEN: Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at the Lewes Ferry Terminal located at 43 Cape Henlopen Drive in Lewes, DE. The ceremony will begin at 12:30 a.m.
WHY: On Saturday, September 10, the Cape Henlopen Vikings bested the Lower Cape May Regional Caper Tigers 49-12 in a varsity football game to claim the 2016 DRBA Commissioners Cup. The game took place at Legends Stadium, home of the Cape Henlopen Vikings. Separated by the Delaware Bay and a short trip aboard the Cape May – Lewes Ferry, the schools renewed their football rivalry in 2010. The Cape Schools hadn’t played in the regular season since the early 1980s. The host Caper Tigers beat the Vikings 25-3 in that first meeting while Cape Henlopen has won the last four clashes. The Vikings now leads the series, 4-1. Athletic competition between the two schools brings the Twin Capes closer together.
