Delaware River and Bay Authority Selects New Claims Manager
Robert R. Piha Hired to Administer Insurance Claims Program
(New Castle, DE) Today, Delaware River and Bay Authority officials announced that Robert R. Piha was selected to be the bi-state agency’s new Claims Manager. Mr. Piha replaces Bonnie Miller of New Castle, Delaware who retired after nearly 27 years of service. Mr. Piha reports to the Director of Finance and he officially began his duties as Claims Manager on April 23, 2012.
“I’m honored that the Delaware River and Bay Authority selected me to lead their insurance claims management program, “said Robert R. Piha. “I hope to bring my talents and expertise that I’ve gained from my many years in the private sector and apply them here to improve the claims management operation. I’m really excited with this tremendous opportunity.”
Serving as the Claims Manager, Mr. Piha is responsible for the management and administration of Authority-wide insurance claims program. In addition, Mr. Piha will also review and assess agency claims data to identify risk, coordinate with Human Resources and all departments for return to work programs, work with the Safety Department to conduct risk-related training programs, maintain claim loss statistics and trends and interact with management and the external insurance broker on the development of the Authority’s Insurance Program.
“With nearly 25 years of experience in the field, Mr. Piha has the credentials and knowledge to be able to build on the Authority’s already successful claims management program,” said Victor Ferzetti, Chief Financial Officer. “Robert brings a new perspective and I am pleased he accepted the opportunity to lend his leadership abilities and problem solving skills to positively impact this important aspect of our finances. We are fortunate to have him as part of our team.”
Mr. Ferzetti also praised the dedicated service of Bonnie Miller to Authority’s claims management program. “Ms. Miller did an outstanding job managing our claims program during her tenure at the Authority,” Ferzetti said. “She created the Authority’s first-ever claims program and was instrumental in making sure this agency was protected. We thank her for her contributions and wish her all the best. ”
Prior to his selection as the Authority’s Claims Manager, Mr. Piha was Compensation Claims Specialist for Corvel Corporation. In his role at Corvel, Robert was responsible for developing and implementing workers’ compensation claims strategies with a strong focus on reducing severity and duration; investigating and managing workers’ compensation claims in DE and PA; and effectively managed customers’ self-insured/high deductible workers' compensation claims program.
Mr. Piha began his career at Cigna Corporation in 1988 as a Workers’ Compensation Claims Representative and was promoted five years later to Claims Supervisor. Following his time at Cigna, Robert went on to work for Sunoco, Inc as a workers’ compensation Claims Specialist.
Robert, who holds a property and casualty license in ten states, including Delaware, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice from the University of Delaware. He also has his Associates in Risk Management designation.
