Tractor-Trailer Catches Fire on I-295 Northbound
Incident Causes Major Traffic Delay
(New Castle, DE) At approximately 3:00 p.m., a tractor-trailer, driven by Latresha T. Wilkie of Irvington, New Jersey and travelling northbound on Interstate 295, caught fire in the vicinity of Mike’s Famous Harley Davidson. The driver jumped out of the cab and wasn’t injured.
The four lanes of I-295 Northbound were closed as firefighters battled the blaze. Only the extreme left shoulder was open to traffic. The truck, owned by Storewide Delivery Company based in Secaucus, New Jersey, was hauling cotton.
Holloway Terrace and Elsmere Fire Companies joined Delaware River and Bay Authority police and maintenance units in responding to the scene. The fire has been extinguished and Authority maintenance personnel are removing the cotton fabric.
As of 5:00 p.m., three left lanes are open to traffic. The right lane and shoulder remain closed. The incident is under investigation.
