DelMoSports Branches Out Across the Bay with New Event in Delaware
Escape From Lewes Open Water Swim Classic dubbed most exciting open water swimming race on the East Coast
June 18, 2015 – DelMoSports, the group known for creating amazing and award-winning triathlon experiences is excited to announce they’re bringing their incredible expertise to Delaware with the Inaugural AtlantiCare/Rothman Escape From Lewes Open Water Classic 5k swim and 1 mile swim.
Nowhere on the East Coast exists such a powerful combination of elements in one athletic event: the ingenuity of DelMoSports event production, the scenic terrain of Cape Henlopen State Park, and the added thrill of leaping off a massive ferry vessel to begin the race. The Escape from Lewes Open Water Classic is sure to become an instant favorite among the thrill-seeking, competitively-driven swimming community. It’s the first-ever event of its kind to be held in Delaware and Governor Jack Markell knows it will be a success.
“We’re proud to host this unique sporting event and see the Lewes Breakwater Harbor as the perfect location,” said Governor Jack Markell. “The Open Water Classic celebrates health, recreation, and a sense of community while also providing a boost for the local economy. Delaware is known for its first class events, festivals, and attractions; and the Open Water Classic will be no exception.”
DelMoSports is a boutique race company based out of Wildwood, New Jersey, that is responsible for organizing some of the area’s most popular triathlons including Challenge Atlantic City Triathlon, Atlantic City Triathlon, Tri the Wildwoods Triathlon, and Escape the Cape – which was voted the Best Triathlon in the Mid-Atlantic and North East Region. Every event organized by DelMo features a challenging course, spectacular scenery and amazing vacation opportunities for athletes and their families.
DelMo is thrilled to once again team up with the Delaware River and Bay Authority for an event. Each year, participants of Escape the Cape begin the triathlon by leaping 12 feet from a ferry vessel into the Delaware Bay. It’s such an exhilarating and exciting way to begin a race that Del Monte wanted to start this Open Water Classic the same way.
“Escape From Lewes Open Water Classic is the perfect complement to the Escape the Cape Triathlon,” said Del Monte. “Now the Cape May Lewes Ferry has two world-class endurance events. The DRBA is a perfect partner for hosting these world-class races.”
“Steve DelMonte and his staff at DelMoSports do an outstanding job coordinating these one-of-a-kind competitive sporting events,” said Heath Gehrke, Director of Ferry Operations. “The Escape the Cape Triathlon held at our Cape May facility has become a must-do, bucket-list, item within the triathlon community. We expect the same type of success with the Escape from Lewes Open Water Classic and we’re excited to be part of these great events.”
Gehrke noted that the Escape from Lewes Open Water Classic also provides a great opportunity to showcase the facilities that the Ferry has to offer. “The Ferry is so much more than simply a relaxing way to travel across the Delaware Bay,” Gehrke added. “We also have awesome waterfront facilities that are perfect for mega-events like concerts, festivals, and sporting contests such as Escape from Lewes. For us, it’s about helping make your spectacular event one that will not soon be forgotten.”
The Escape From Lewes Open Water Classic is both a USMS and WOWSA sanctioned race. Swimmers of all ability levels will be able to test their skills in the event, which features wetsuit and non-wetsuit categories along with junior, masters, and triathlon club categories.
The swimming endurance event, scheduled for Sunday, September 27, is expected to draw more than 1,000 participants and their families to the Delaware resort area. Business leaders in the area say the event will provide a nice boost to the local economy after the summer tourism season has ended.
“Events like this are turning our fall shoulder season into more of an extended summer high season,” said Scott Thomas, Executive Director of Southern Delaware Tourism. “Escape From Lewes will bring new visitors to our region that will stay in our hotels, dine along our culinary coast and shop tax-free.”
