Cape May – Lewes Ferry Seeks Creative, Energetic Mascot Performers
Pirate Pete Readies for Busy 2016 Summer Season
(Cape May, NJ) Today, Cape May – Lewes Ferry officials announced that a recruiting effort is underway to find creative, energetic performers for the role of Ferry’s Mascot, Pirate Pete. Managed by the Raymond Entertainment Group, the Ferry’s mascot program is entering its sixteenth season of fun-filled interaction with customers and visitors.
“Pirate Pete is the Cape May – Lewes Ferry’s Ambassador of Fun,” said Michael Porch, marketing manager for the Ferry. “When he is around, people naturally gravitate to him and it’s a great to see the huge smiles and laughter coming from our younger customers when he’s entertaining them.”
According to Dave Raymond, founder of the Raymond Entertainment Group, prospective mascot performers need to be self-starters, reliable and engaging. “A playful personality is important and candidates should also have the ability to dance, perform and communicate non-verbally,” Raymond said. “If you have the inkling, it can be an awesome summer job.” Raymond added that performers must be physically fit to handle the rigors of donning the mascot costume.
Whether on the boats, inside the terminals or at a special event, Pirate Pete can be found having fun and entertaining guests at the Cape May – Lewes Ferry. A favorite with children and adults alike, he’s extremely approachable and loves to have his photo taken with his friends and admirers. During the 16 years of the Ferry’s mascot program, many gifted performers have played Pirate Pete - including men, women, people in their twenties, and folks in their sixties.

While in-costume experience is not required, it is a plus. All performers will be given basic in costume training if selected.
Originally named Lighthouse Pete, the Pirate, he now simply goes by Pirate Pete. Legend has it that Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) work crews made an amazing discovery in 1999 inside the Breakwater Lighthouse off the coast of Lewes, DE. The Lighthouse, which had been sealed up for years, was opened by DRBA maintenance employees who were assessing the condition of the structure. They were stunned to find a blue creature resembling a pirate accompanied by a parrot living inside the lighthouse. Since his discovery on August 18, 1999, Pirate Pete has been a constant fixture at the Cape May – Lewes Ferry.
