Vehicle Overturns near the Delaware Memorial Bridge
Four Passengers Flee the Scene
(New Castle, DE) On Sunday night, May 23, 2010, at 9:55 pm, the Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) Police Department responded to the area of the westbound span of the Delaware Memorial Bridge for a report of an accident involving an overturned vehicle. Upon arriving at the scene, DRBA Police found a 2005 Jeep Liberty with significant damage on I-295 southbound roadway between the base of the bridge and the toll plaza.
As officers approached the vehicle, they found German Pinto CASTELLANO, 19, of Newark, DE, sitting on the guardrail adjacent to the crash, and observed four male subjects fleeing from the scene. After a short foot pursuit, DRBA officers apprehended the four suspects, and placed them under arrest. CASTELLANO told police that all five people in the Jeep had been drinking prior to the crash. Arrested after fleeing the scene were Noe Ibarra JUAREZ, 33, of Newark, DE; Gerardo TORRES, 37, of Wilmington, DE; Santiago Garcia SANTILLAN, 33, of New Castle, DE; and Heriberto Chavez VILLEGAS, 19, of Bear, DE.
JUAREZ, TORRES, and CASTELLANO were transported to Christiana ER where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries and released. JUAREZ was charged with driving under the influence, resisting arrest, and numerous traffic offenses, and was released after pleading guilty and paying a $1,100 fine. Charged with resisting arrest, TORRES, SANTILLAN, and VILLEGAS were released after pleading guilty and paying a $165 fine.
