(New Castle, DE) Beginning Monday night, November 30 and continuing until Friday, December 4, Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) contractors will close one (1) of two (2)I-295 Northbound lanes in the vicinity of the I-295 NB and U.S. 13 Interchange from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. each of these four nights. The schedule paving work, which will be undertaken weather permitting, is associated with the Interstate 295 Phase III rehabilitation project on the approaches to the Delaware Memorial Bridge.
The DRBA has designed the projects for as few delays as possible. However, during morning and evening rush hours, some delays should be expected. The safety of the traveling
public and on-site highway contractors is the agency’s highest priority. The posted speed limit of 35 mph in the construction zone will be strictly enforced. Commuters and travelers are urged to be careful and stay alert in and around construction zones, obey all posted speed limit signs, and plan to take a few extra minutes during their commute.
This construction activity is part of the $26.8 million Phase III construction project on I-295 northbound and associated ramps that began in June 2008. This project is a collaborative effort between DRBA and the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) designed to
improve roadway safety and operational capacity, while rehabilitating aging roadways, ramps, and bridges. New traffic patterns are being created and bridges no longer needed are being removed. An important element of this project is addressing an existing safety concern regarding traffic cutting across I-295 northbound lanes between I-95/I-495 and US13 which will be eliminated under this project. In addition, approximately 1.6 miles of I-295 northbound will be rehabilitated/reconstructed bringing the roadway up to today’s federal guidelines.
