MOTORIST ADVISORY: – Suspender Rope Work Requires Multiple Lane Closures on Southbound Span of Delaware Memorial Bridge for Three Consecutive Tuesdays in June
(New Castle, DE) The Delaware River and Bay Authority’s (DRBA) contractor, Cornell and Company, Inc., is working to replace suspender ropes on the Delaware-bound span of the Delaware Memorial Bridge (DMB). Construction crews are replacing suspension ropes near mid-span of the southbound bridge.
On Tuesday, June 7, the two left lanes on the southbound span of the DMB will be closed from 5:00 a.m. through 8:00 p.m. to permit the contractor to replace suspender ropes. This lane closure schedule will be repeated on Tuesday, June 14 and Tuesday, June 21. The two right lanes on the southbound span will be open.
“We want to minimize the inconvenience on our customers and our historical data indicates that Tuesdays are the lowest volume days on the Delaware Memorial Bridge,” said Shekhar Scindia, Project Engineer for the Delaware River and Bay Authority. “Should we experience inclement weather on one of the Tuesdays selected, the work will be postponed to Wednesday, which is the second lowest volume day.”
The DRBA would like to thank its customers for their patience and understanding as the Authority continues to progress on the suspender rope replacement project. As the construction activity continues to progress on the replacement of suspension ropes, physical work may not be visible from the travel lanes but the Authority assures its customers that the work is being completed as quickly as possible.
Safety of the traveling public, highway contractors on-site, and DRBA employees continues to be our highest priority. Motorists heading southbound on the Delaware Memorial Bridge may experience minor delays, particularly during rush hour periods. Travelers are urged to be careful and stay alert in and around construction zones, and obey all posted speed limit signs.
