The DRBA is looking for bright men and women of all ethnic backgrounds who are physically fit and public service oriented to be part of our team.
Interested candidates must possess:
- A Bachelor's degree, signifying completion of the undergraduate curriculum and graduation from an accredited college or university; or
Alternatively, an Associate's degree or have completed 60 semester hours of college credits (or 90 quarter credits) from an accredited college or university, plus at least two (2) years of satisfactory employment indicating the maturity of the applicant; or
Alternatively, have completed 30 semester hours of college credits (or 45 quarter credits) from an accredited college or university and one (1) year as full time, Delaware or New Jersey certified police officer or two (2) years of active duty military experience.
- Be twenty-one (21) years of age or older.
- Possess a valid drivers license.
- Be of good reputation and character.
- Not have been convicted of a serious misdemeanor or any felony-level crime.
- Not have received a bad conduct or a dishonorable discharge, if he or she served in the armed forces.
- Be a citizen of the United State of America.
- Successfully complete the written exam.
- Successfully complete the departments physical fitness test.
If, after consideration, a conditional offer of employment is made, a candidate must:
- Have minimum uncorrected vision not greater than 20/200 in each eye, correctable with lenses to 20/20 in each eye.
- Be able to distinguish between the colors of red, green, and amber.
- Be able to pass a departmentally approved physical examination.
- Not have any physical deformity that would be detrimental to the proper performance of police duties.
- Pass a drug screening test.
- Be recommended for employment as a police officer by a departmentally approved, licensed psychologist/psychiatrist.
- Have his or her weight within proper proportion.
- Have normal hearing in both ears or have the ability to accomplish same with reasonable accommodation.
- Not have a communicable disease for which no reasonable accommodation is available.
- Not have any pathology of the eyes that is detrimental to the proper performance of police duties and for which no reasonable accommodation is available.
- Be free from any major impediment of the senses for which no reasonable accommodation is available.
The DRBA operates the Delaware Memorial Bridge, the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, Three Forts Park, New Castle Airport, Millville Airport, Cape May Airport, Civil Air Terminal at Dover AFB and the Dover Airpark. Essential functions of a DRBA police officers job include, but are not limited to:
- Engaging in interpersonal communication with the public and co-workers by promoting a professional and courteous environment at DRBA facilities.
- Providing professional police services to the public by responding safely and promptly to calls for service.
- Protecting the public, co-workers, and themselves from harm and injury by following established safety and security practices and by correcting and/or reporting security hazards or risks.
- Taking responsibility for in-depth criminal and traffic investigations.
- Exercising discretion in the use of deadly and non deadly force.
- Enforcing motor vehicle laws of the states of New Jersey and Delaware.
- Possessing the physical ability to subdue attacking or resisting individuals.
- Working rotating shifts.
- Preparing different types of reports, including traffic reports, reports of crime, summonses, and arrest reports.
- Performing manual traffic direction and control.
- Utilizing a wide assortment of equipment in the performance of his or her job duties. This includes a full-size automobile, computers, semi-automatic handguns, shotguns, photographic equipment, and portable police radios.
