Cape May-Lewes Ferry Conducts Full-Scale Emergency Drill for Community Safety

The Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) is dedicated to more than just connecting people and places across the Delaware Bay. Our top priority is the safety of our passengers and the communities we serve. This commitment was recently put to the test as the Cape May-Lewes Ferry hosted a full-scale emergency exercise. While such drills are a regular part of our operations, this event was also a powerful demonstration of our deep dedication to emergency preparedness and community partnership.

A Coordinated Approach to Critical Situations

A successful response to any emergency, particularly on a maritime vessel, relies on seamless communication and coordination among a variety of specialized agencies. This comprehensive exercise, held on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, simulated a mass casualty incident involving an active shooter on the Ferry. The complexity of the scenario required the expertise of numerous partners, including the United States Coast Guard, New Jersey State Police, and various state and local first responders.

According to DRBA Director of Ferry Operations Heath Gehrke, the drill provided "a valuable opportunity to collectively test communication, coordination, and rescue procedures." This wasn't merely a practice session; it was a collaborative effort to ensure every agency involved, from our ferry personnel to local law enforcement and medical teams, can work together effectively in a high-stress environment. Our dedication to a coordinated response is what truly sets our safety protocols apart.

Continuous Improvement for Peace of Mind

Following the intensive drill, an immediate debriefing was held, allowing participants and evaluators to provide critical feedback for identifying areas of strength and opportunities for improvement. The insights gained from this exercise will directly influence the refinement of our emergency response plans, ensuring we are always evolving to meet new challenges.

Our proactive approach to safety is a core part of our mission. We understand that our passengers and the local communities in Cape May, NJ, and Lewes, DE rely on us for safe and reliable travel. By consistently investing in advanced training exercises and fostering strong relationships with our emergency partners, we are building a safer environment for everyone. While we hope we never have to implement the procedures we practiced, our commitment to preparedness offers peace of mind to all who travel with us.
