DRBA to Host 10th Annual World Environment Day Celebration
NEW CASTLE, Del. - Today, Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) officials announced that the tenth annual World Environment Day celebration will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at Veterans Memorial Park in New Castle, Delaware. Marking a decade of environmental advocacy near the Delaware Memorial Bridge, this free community event will feature over 80 exhibitors, interactive displays, and educational workshops. The celebration will be open to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
This year’s global theme, #ClimateAction, focuses on the urgent need for sustainable solutions to protect our planet’s future. The 2026 event aims to empower neighbors to come together to protect nature and explore the latest advancements in green technology, renewable energy, and regional conservation efforts. Following a record-breaking 2025 event that saw approximately 2,000 attendees, the DRBA is expanding its programming to offer a more diverse mix of federal, state, and local agencies alongside private industry leaders.
“What began ten years ago as a gathering of DRBA employees has grown into a major regional hub for environmental education and community action,” said Silvana Dominioni, Director of the DRBA Environmental, Health and Safety Department. “Our 10th anniversary is a celebration of the passion we share with our community for preserving our environment. We are thrilled to welcome students, professionals, and families to experience everything from electric vehicle displays to marine habitat studies in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.”
In honor of the 10th anniversary, the DRBA is proud to recognize several organizations that have been vendors since the event's inception. These longtime partners include the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary, Delmarva Power, the Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA), Meat House Market, Veolia, Waste Management, and the U.S. Coast Guard.
Attendees can engage with a wide variety of experts across several environmental and safety sectors:
- Government & Conservation: Representatives from multiple DNREC divisions (Climate, Coastal, & Energy; Fish & Wildlife; Air Quality; and Parks & Recreation) will be joined by the NJDEP, New Castle County, and the Delaware River Basin Commission to discuss regional preservation.
- Education & Youth Engagement: Local schools, including George Read and Gunning Bedford Middle Schools, will participate alongside higher education leaders like Rowan, Rutgers, and Salem Community College.
- Wildlife & Nature: The Brandywine and Cohanzick Zoos, Delaware Nature Society, and the MERR Institute will offer insights into local biodiversity and habitat protection.
- Green Energy & Industry: Leaders such as Chemours, Croda, PSEG Nuclear, and Delmarva Power & Light will showcase advancements in sustainable technology, while Amtrak and DART highlight eco-friendly transit.
- Community & Safety: Groups like Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the Delaware Safety Council, and local fire companies like Holloway Terrace will provide safety demonstrations and community resources.
The festivities will also include local food from Farmers & Bankers Brewing, interactive workshops like DDP Yoga, and professional networking with the DRBA Human Resources and Grounds departments. Visitors are encouraged to explore eco-friendly product showcases from vendors like Garbo Grabber and Castle Window, and snap photos at the EHS Selfie Exhibit using the official hashtag #ClimateAction. The event will take place both outside and under a large tent at Veterans Memorial Park off Cherry Lane.
World Environment Day, recognized globally by the United Nations on June 5, serves as the largest international platform for environmental outreach. By hosting this local celebration on June 4, the DRBA continues its mission of connecting communities with the tools and information necessary to make a positive impact on the world around them.
