DRBA Hosts Fourth Annual World Environment Day Celebration
NEW CASTLE, Del. – Today, Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) officials announced that the fourth annual World Environment Day celebration event will be held at Veterans Memorial Park located near the Delaware Memorial Bridge in New Castle, Delaware. The free community event – featuring exhibits, giveaway items, and static displays – will be open at 10:00 a.m. and continue until 2:00 p.m.
This year’s theme “Beat Plastic Pollution” focuses on the pressing need to eradicate plastic waste, a widespread environmental problem that impacts ecosystems and human health all around the globe.
“Our World Environment Day celebration continues to expand programming and exhibits to positively impact our environment and share our passion with everyone,” said Silvana Dominioni, Director of the DRBA Environmental, Health and Safety Department. “We’re really excited to welcome the environmental community, STEM students and our employees to celebrate our planet. Come out and join us in a relaxed atmosphere to learn and celebrate our environment!

Learn about environmental issues from government regulators, environmental experts, and company representatives on such topics as recycling, air quality, food waste, plastic bag bans, renewable energy, greener products, plastic pollution, stainability, watersheds, endangered species, energy conservation, marine life and habitat, oil spill cleanup, Delaware River ecology, and climate impacts.
Make sure to sample eco-friendly/minimal ingredients (Sustainably Safe booth), enter to win raffle prizes and snap a photo at the selfie station using the officially registered UN hashtag #BeatPlasticPollution.
More than eighty (80) exhibitors will be participating in the four-hour event that will take place both outside and under a large tent at the spacious Veterans Memorial Park off Cherry Lane. With lots of new vendors this year and fan favorites returning, make sure to meet them all including:
- Delaware Safety Council with their mocktails and impaired driving exhibits
- Planet Smoothie, Wawa, Roots Kitchen, Meat House and the Moo Mobile
- Learn about eco-friendly consumer products that are not only good for the environment but you too
- Visit traveling touch tanks filled with sea creatures - hands-on crabs, sea stars, sea urchins, mussels, snails, clams, horseshoe crabs, and touch tank of live shellfish and marine animals with displays about shellfish ecology and aquaculture.
- Walk through a mobile learning lab sharing information and environmental education on freshwater systems, water quality, fish, and ecology.
- Talk with energy experts on diverse issues such as renewable energy, wind turbines, solar, nuclear, energy conservation and climate.
- Talk with transportation professionals on how your commute can improve air quality.
- Display of emergency response and oil spill equipment.
- Just in time for summer, meet with state organizations that monitor beach water quality and coordinate beach litter cleanups.
- An assortment of federal, state, and local environmental government agencies and organizations
- Local zoos (Cohanzick and Brandywine) and state park representatives.
- Local school STEM programs exhibiting their projects.
Refreshments will also be on-site for all attendees.
World Environment Day, which falls on the actual event date of June 5, is the biggest international day for the environment. With over 150 countries participating, this World Environment Day engages governments, businesses, civil society, schools, celebrities, cities, and communities, raising awareness and celebrating environmental action.
