Investing in Youth Aviation & STEM Careers at Wilmington Airport

At the Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA), our work is about more than just managing airports and crossings. We believe our role includes a deep commitment to the communities we serve in Delaware and New Jersey. A key part of that commitment is investing in the next generation, which is why we're proud to host "Take FLIGHT with AVi," with Aviation Influence and Atlantic Aviation on September 27, 2025 at our Wilmington Airport (ILG). This free youth aviation and STEAM event is a reflection of our dedication to inspiring young minds and building a strong, local talent pipeline for our industry.

Why Aviation Careers Matter

The aviation industry is an exciting field with a growing demand for a skilled and passionate workforce. The career opportunities are incredibly diverse, from becoming a pilot or air traffic controller to working as an aeronautical engineer or maintenance technician. However, many young people, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, may not be aware that these exciting careers are accessible to them.

With presenters from Black Women in Aviation and Delaware’s Civil Air Patrol, events like Take FLIGHT with AVi helps us close that awareness gap and show youth that their classroom learning in STEM has incredible real-world applications right here at their local airport.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Innovators

Our Director of Airport Operations, Ben Clendaniel, emphasizes the importance of this mission. "The mission of familiarizing young people with the world of aviation is so important and will hopefully inspire the next generation to pursue their dreams," he said. This event is designed to have a tangible impact. By bringing in accomplished aviation leaders like record-breaking pilot Jamail Larkins and Aviation Influence co-founder Lyndse Costabile, we are providing young attendees with powerful role models who can show them that anything is possible.

A Collaborative Approach to Empowerment

Through hands-on activities, from static aircraft displays to interactive STEAM exhibits, we hope to spark curiosity and ignite a lifelong passion in the next generation. These immersive experiences can serve as a turning point for transforming a child’s simple interest in planes into a serious consideration of an aviation career. Our community involvement is centered on building these key partnerships, like the one with Aviation Influence and Atlantic Aviation. By working together, we can create opportunities that empower our youth and ensure a bright future for our airports and the entire region.
