This September, if you visit any of our DRBA campuses, from the bustling terminals of Wilmington Airport (ILG) to the scenic shores served by the Cape May - Lewes Ferry, you'll likely notice a vibrant splash of teal. “We're incredibly proud to have completed our second annual "Turn the Towns Teal" initiative, a national effort to raise awareness for Ovarian Cancer symptoms and, ultimately, to save lives within our communities” said Jennifer Oberle-Howard, the DRBA’s Deputy Director of Communications & Marketing.

A Cause Close to Our Hearts

The annual "Turn the Towns Teal" campaign is a cause close to many hearts, and this year, the spirit of collaboration and community care shined brightly at the DRBA. Teams across our various locations, including Lewes, Cape May, ILG, the Delaware Memorial Bridge, and Veterans Memorial Park, came together to transform our properties with beautiful teal bows. The initiative was brought to the forefront by Jennifer Oberle-Howard, and Jen Thevar, who leads the Community Engagement Committee.

"The whole point is to honor Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, especially since symptoms often go unnoticed," Oberle-Howard explained.

The Art of Giving Back

This year, the journey to turning our campuses teal began with a dedicated group who took on the task of creating hundreds of teal bows. "This task was particularly rewarding, as we are often bogged down with our daily duties, and it's nice to take a step back and share a common goal for the good of the community," said Oberle-Howard. This shared purpose was evident in every hand-tied bow that adorned the DRBA’s facilities.

Ovarian cancer is often called the "silent killer" because its symptoms can be subtle and easily mistaken for other conditions. Raising awareness about these symptoms is absolutely vital for early detection and improved outcomes. Oberle-Howard emphasized why this particular campaign is so crucial: "With this issue, symptoms aren’t always apparent, and it's essential that our team members and customers share this information with their loved ones."

Executive Director Joel Coppage shared his gratitude for the team’s efforts. "Raising awareness of ovarian cancer is critical in the efforts to save lives," he stated. "I very much appreciate how the team has demonstrated the importance of caring for others, which is a characteristic we hold dear at the DRBA."

Looking ahead, the DRBA hopes to not only continue supporting and spreading awareness every year but also to expand our involvement with the Delaware Ovarian Cancer Foundation. We are a part of the communities we serve, and our participation in "Turn the Towns Teal" is a testament to this commitment.
