Honoring the Tuskegee Airmen & Inspiring the Next Generation at ILG
The Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) was proud to play a significant role in the Second Annual Tuskegee Airmen Commemoration Day this March 2025. Hosted with the Delaware Army National Guard Aviation Support Facility at the Wilmington Airport (ILG), this powerful day was a tribute to the legacy of the original Tuskegee Airmen, the trailblazing African American pilots who tore through systemic barriers while serving our nation in flight during World War II. It was an honor to partner with the Delaware National Guard and Black Women in Aviation, who sponsored the event.
Inspiring the Future of Aviation and STEM
This year's commemoration was not just a simple historical remembrance, but an immersive and inspiring event designed to connect the past with the future. Generously sponsored by Black Women in Aviation, the day aimed to inspire the next generation to pursue careers in aviation, aerospace, and STEM. Young attendees had the chance to participate in hands-on workshops, gain valuable insights from experienced mentors, and explore historical exhibits that brought the incredible story of the Tuskegee Airmen to life. This focus on STEM careers, aviation mentorship, and aerospace education is crucial for building a diverse and skilled workforce for the future- which we continually advocate for here at the Authority.
DRBA's Commitment to Community and Aviation
The DRBA was honored to be a planning partner and participant in this meaningful event. Representing our team were Director of Airport Operations Ben Clendaniel, former Airport Operations Manager Kelvin Lesene, and Deputy Director of Communications & Marketing Jennifer Oberle-Howard. Their presence at the event underscored the DRBA’s commitment to supporting community initiatives, promoting diversity in aviation, and fostering career opportunities across our facilities, including Wilmington Airport (ILG).
Behind the Scenes: Making the Event a Success
A special thanks goes to the dedicated DRBA team members who worked behind the scenes to set up the event and make it a success while providing their invaluable expertise and support. This successful event highlights the collaborative spirit between the DRBA, the Delaware Army National Guard, and community sponsors.
This event was proudly presented in partnership with: Delaware Tourism Office, Greater Wilmington Convention & Visitors Bureau, and the Delaware State University Aviation Program.
The Tuskegee Airmen’s Legacy
The legacy left behind by the Tuskegee Airmen is one of courage and perseverance in the face of immense obstacles. By honoring their legacy, we not only pay tribute to their service but also help pave the way for a more inclusive and diverse future in aviation. The DRBA is committed to this vision, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with the Delaware Army National Guard and Black Women in Aviation to inspire a new generation of pilots, engineers, and leaders. We know that with hard work and determination, the sky is truly the limit!
